to Abersychan in company with John Dyer who was
riding a Horse hired for Jones - On arriving at Abersychan
we went to David Richards' Beer house where I saw
Jones and about 20 people - Jones showed a Pistol &
said that he expected Jordan (the Constable) every minute
and that if he came he would only get a ball through his
head - I heard some of the people say they had no
arms - Jones told them to go to the Race Course that night
and that there would be plenty of arms there - he mentioned
Williams of the Blaina as having a great number of Guns
and Pistols and about 1500 pikes coming home that night
He then told them to collect themselves together & begin about
2 o'clock to force all they could to go along with them to the
Race Course - He said "prick them along with your pikes
and make them come" - He further said that the next
day there would be placards posted up in Newport -
announcing whatever was requisite and which should
begin with "We the Executive Government of England"
& that they should be signed "John Frost President"
He then ordered me and some others to go to Chapmans
the Confectioners
and to tell him that the Old Lady
would be down about 7 o'clock that Evening
& he, Chapman must meet him, Jones, at
Pontypool that Evening on the Race Course
I gave the message and then went back to
Pontypool - I went to the Race Course between
10 & 11 and on the Road fell in with Jones and
others - they were most of them armed - I
attempted to go away but was forced to go
with them to the New Inn (Prossers) - The
House was full of armed men and I saw Jones
Come in - He ordered the men out and told them
they were to go on to Newport in three parties
The pikes first Guns next and the others with
